Testimonial: Print PDF file from PLC with DataSuite

The company MSB GmbH & Co. KG approached us with a problem. Labels are to be printed with a machine control system. A specific paper tray is to be used for printing, the print data is available as PDF files.

From an idea to a component of the DataSuite

Fortunately, Mr Plaßmann asked us for advice first. Our DataSuite software has had a print function for some time. This means that Excel files or individual spreadsheets could be printed out without any problems. However, he would like to print a PDF file. Until now, this was not part of the software. No problem for us: we have expanded our software entirely according to the customer’s wishes.

Alternatively, Mr Plaßmann could have had customised software developed. This would have been considerably more expensive and would have taken several weeks, if not months.

Planning and implementation

It was easy for our team to develop this new function and implement the requirements, including tests, in a short space of time, enabling Mr Plaßmann to complete his project successfully and on time.

The function is now included in DataSuite from version 3.4.4. and is accessible to every user.
With just a few clicks, you can now print CSV, XLSX and PDF files from the machine control system and save yourself a few manual steps.

Visualization - The machine reveals information

Until now, you had to rely on someone knowing what was wrong with the machine. The newly installed sensor system now provides a wide range of measured variables. A little hack for displaying DB records

Visual database content as web pages

It is very obvious that you can save database contents in PLCs, such as S7-1500. But did you know that you can also store records in our integrated simulator without a PLC being connected? The integrated simulator has no logic, but it can store values. From there you can export all data to a PDF, web page, Excel or CSV, automatically and without a “real” PLC.

Yes, you can log all available PLC data to CSV/Excel/PDF files. It is often used for logging events like overtemperature or defects. Even if the PLC itself breaks, DataSuite can detect this. But you can go one step further: Why not just add a trigger that sends a message with machine data directly to service personnel? This can be done via mail, SMS, Threema or Telegram.

Run Python and other scripts with PLC data

You can start any Windows application with a trigger. This allows you to call Python scripts with arguments directly from your PLC. You can pass parameters such as temperatures as arguments to your script. This script could generate a calculated CSV file, which you then import back into your PLC using DataSuite.
