Quick Start with DataSuite for IT Experts

Lesedauer: 2 min

DataSuite is the bridge between industrial control systems and IT environments. It enables seamless data exchange from Siemens S7 PLCs to SQL databases, Excel files, and other IT systems—without the need for PLC programming.

Why is DataSuite Relevant for IT? #

Many manufacturing plants use PLC-based automation systems whose data is difficult for IT systems to access. With DataSuite, you can transfer production data, machine states, and alarms into SQL databases, Excel files, or web applications—without modifying PLC programs.

Your Quick Start in 5 Steps #

Detailed step-by-step instructions for each task are available in the navigation menu.

1. Install on a Windows Server or PC #

  • Download and install DataSuite on a Windows server or dedicated PC.
  • Optional: Install as a Windows Service for background execution and auto-start after reboot.

2. Connect to the PLC #

  • Preferred: Use OPC UA for secure and standardized communication.
    • Activate the OPC UA server on the PLC and configure the IP address.
  • Alternative: Enable PUT/GET in the PLC and configure access in DataSuite (less secure, use only in protected networks).

3. Configure Data Storage in SQL or Excel #

  • SQL Databases: Connect to Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL.
  • Excel: Define the target file where DataSuite will write PLC data.
  • Other options: Export as PDF or create web-based dashboards.

4. Set Up Triggers for Automation #

Define triggers to automate data transfers:

  • Based on time schedules
  • On specific events (e.g., alarms)
  • Cyclically for continuous data collection

5. Security Best Practices #

  • Always prefer OPC UA over PUT/GET for secure connections.
  • Harden your network firewall to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Regularly update DataSuite for security patches.

Why IT Teams Use DataSuite #

DataSuite simplifies data integration between OT and IT—no deep PLC knowledge required.
It allows IT teams to provide real-time production data to business systems, analytics platforms, and reporting tools.
