Quick Start with DataSuite – For OT Experts

Lesedauer: 2 min

DataSuite connects machines and IT systems without complex programming. It enables the easy transfer of data from Siemens S7 controllers into Excel files or existing database systems. This guide provides a quick start to DataSuite for OT professionals.

Why is DataSuite Important for OT? #

Most PLCs do not store production data long-term. With DataSuite, you can automatically collect and store machine data, status values, and alarms in IT systems. This helps meet requirements for quality, traceability, and Industry 4.0—without deep IT knowledge.

Your Quick Start in 5 Steps #

For each step, you can find detailed step-by-step guides in the menu on the left.

Which PLCs are Supported? #

All Siemens S7 controllers via PUT/GET and all controllers supporting OPC UA.

To check compatibility before starting, here is an overview:

  • S7 Communication (Put/Get): Compatible with S7-200, S7-300, S7-400, S7-1200, S7-1500, and ET200.
  • OPC UA: Supported on S7-1200, S7-1500, ET200SP, and the OPC UA server IBH Link UA.

Step 1: Install DataSuite on the Production PC #

  • Install DataSuite on a Windows PC in the production environment or on a server.
  • Launch the application and select your PLC.

Step 2: Configure the PLC Connection #

  • Recommended: Enable OPC UA → secure communication.
  • Alternative: Enable PUT/GET → only in a secured network.
  • If optimized data blocks are enabled in TIA Portal: disable optimization when using PUT/GET.

Step 3: Store Data #

  • Excel files: Automatically log production or quality data in spreadsheets.
  • SQL databases: For integration with ERP, MES, or business intelligence systems.
  • Other formats: Generate PDF reports or publish web dashboards.

Step 4: Automate with Triggers #

Configure DataSuite to write data on schedule, on events, or cyclically.

Step 5: Ensure Security #

  • For database connections: involve the IT department to manage permissions.
  • Use PUT/GET only in a secured machine network.
  • Regularly install DataSuite updates.

Conclusion for OT #

DataSuite simplifies connectivity between machines and IT systems—without PLC programming or SQL knowledge. This allows you to reliably collect and store production data for analysis and reporting.
